Philadelphia, Pa.--Drexel scored the final nine points of the first half and the first eight of the second half and had an outstanding defensive performance in a 67-41 victory against Northeastern. The Dragons (13-4, 5-2 CAA) held Northeastern (5-13, 3-4 CAA) to just six field goals in the second half and forced 18 Huskies' turnover in the contest.
Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y/St. Raymond's) each had 16 points to lead Drexel. Mejia had 11 of his 16 in the second half and was 4-for-7 from long range. Elegar finished 7-for-9 from the floor. The Dragons started slow offensively, but finished shooting 55 percent from the floor. Many of the buckets were lay-ups, keyed by the defense that made 12 steals in the game.
Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) continued his dominating play in the paint. The senior had 11 rebounds, the sixth time in the last seven games he has had at least 10 boards, and blocked three shots. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedicts) and Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) each finished with nine points and four assists. Mason had four steals and now is just five away from becoming the second Dragon ever to reach the 200 career steals mark. Only Michael Anderson has more steals than Mason.
Bennet Davis led Northeastern with 11 points, while teammate Matt Janning added 10 points. The Huskies finished the game shooting 32 percent. They were just 4-for-16 from behind the arc.
The Dragons are off until Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Delaware. Game time is set for noon and the contest can be seen live on CN8. It can also be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
